You Are the Seed Monsen?or Cesa?reo Gabara?in (1936- 1991), one of the best-known composers of Spanish liturgical music, was inspired by the actions of humble people he met during his ministry.

Born in Spain, Gabara?in received degrees in theology, journalism and musicology from the University of Madrid. As a parish priest he was known for his work with youth and cyclists, taking so many tours with them that he became known as “priest of the cyclists.”

Gabara?in was president of the Spanish liturgical music association and an important composer of congregational song following the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). After conducting a workshop tour of 22 cities in the United States in 1990, he died of cancer at age 55 in 1991.

The refrain of “You Are the Seed” (“Sois la semilla”) is based on the Great Commission, Matthew 28:19-20: “Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (ASV)
