YOU are needed
I met someone this week whose name I'd heard. He's a member of church.... but hasn't attended "for a while." In fact, during the two and a half years that I've served as your pastor, he and his family haven't made it to worship.... It made me smile that he proudly said, "I'm a member of your church, you know." I'm very glad that he still claims us, but it also makes my heart ache a bit... just to think about how much he's missing out by not being here - AND how much WE are missing out by not having his presence with us.
You never know which Sunday it will be when you sit in worship and - WOW - God touches you! It may be a song we sing that brings a tear to your eye, it may be a prayer the elders offer as you prepare to take communion, or it may be the presence of that person sitting next to you. Your life is changed; your life is better; your life is blessed - just because YOU showed up! Whether it's a moment in worship, sharing with others in Sunday School or at a small group, or the joy of working side by side to serve in Christ's name, there are countless times that BEing an active part of the church enriches us.
Part of the mystery of faith is that we never know when God will use us to be a blessing to someone else. More than once I've heard people talk about visiting FCC for the first time - and being so happy to see someone they already knew here. What if YOU weren't here that day? What if YOU are the reason someone else decided to keep coming to church here - and you never knew it. It's important for EACH and EVERY one of us to BE present for one another. Maybe you think, "I'm only one person, no one will miss me, it's only one Sunday I'll be gone." But then, two Sundays become three and you find yourself "out of the habit" of going.... What if every member of FCC said, "I'm only one person...."? And suddenly, there were no persons in worship?!
I just want you to know: YOU are important! YOU are important to God. YOU are important to the church. Even if it's "been a while" since you've made it to worship - come back. Why not come THIS Sunday? It's the season of Advent, a lovely time to celebrate the birth of Christ. If there's someone you know of who's a member of FCC but you can't remember the last time you saw them, then call - just let them know that you missed them.
Good news: this Sunday we're offering "full amnesty" and forgiveness to ANYONE who thinks they've been gone too long to come back. In fact, we offer forgiveness EVERY SUNDAY!
